Many world-class stars, a lot of excitement and armwrestling on a high sports level, long and hard journey of our representatives and two silvers won by Martha Opalińska from Grudziądz in the 60kg class for junior left and right hand - that's how you can briefly describe this year's XXXII World Armwrestling Championships, which took place from 06 to 12 December 2010 in the United States.

The place where the world arena was palced was a hall by the Casa Blanca Convention Center in Las Vegas. Finally more than 800 top athletes from 39 countries came forward to take part. Poland was represented by seven people of the National Team chosen at the X Polish Championships, held in early April 2010 in Gdynia.

For the first two days of the championships the entire verification procedure was held (registration of the teams, and weighing in). The next days are at first junior, masters, grand masters, super grand masters and  disabled for left hand (8th December) and right hand (9th December), and then the left hand seniors rivalry (10th December) and the left hand (11th December).

We returned to the country with only, or perhaps as many as two medals . Taking into consideration the number of competing athletes (over 800 people) and the number of our representatives (7 people) it is a great success of the Polish Armwrestling Team. But above all it was a personal success of Marta Opalinska from Grudziadz. How she was preparing, what does she think of her start and why silver and not gold? For these and other questions Marta will answer herself in an exclusive interview for Armpower.

Armpower: Did you expect such a success at the World Championships - Las Vegas 2010?
Marta Opalinska: This was my last competitions, where I could compete in the junior class. I was t's preparing very hard for them. I expected a good performance, I felt very well.

Armpower: Was it hard? Were your rivals were poorly prepared, or simply you were better?

Marta Opalinska: I think that if someone decides to start at the World Championsips, it's not the start just to "try". Especially if you count for a good place. Everyone trains and prepars as good as they can to compete with eachother without any exceptions. Losses of the favorites at these championships only confirms this. For sure it was hard, but I was just better and very very happy.

Armpower: Why not gold?

Marta Opalinska: Yes, it was close. For the left hand, my opponent won, after a quick attack. Maybe if I would have attacked in a different way.... Now it is not worth to do what-if. She was really strong and deservedly won this medal. For the right hand I was supposed to attack using another technique that has proved to be the best in this case. I made two mistakes, two fouls which took me a gold medal. Unfortunately, that happens in sport. But I'm really happy with silver medals.

Armpower: Seniors - without a medal? Why?

Marta Opalinska: Senior women represent a totally different level than juniors, for obvious reasons (no age limit). Some competitors train as much as old I am. I fought, but surely I'm missing still a lot to the forefront.

Armpower: Were you preparing somehow specially for this year's World Championships?
Marta Opalinska: These were my target competitions, so all preparations were under a subordinate. At the World Championships you have to be well prepared and I trained with this in mind. I could not let go. Without any doubt, we hit the target at 100%.

Armpower: Recently, before the World Championships in Hungary you took off at Hungary and at the Nemiroff World Cup. Were there not too many of these before such a large event and did you manage to regenerate?
Marta Opalinska: Quite the contrary. These starts were supposed to be a test for me. They added me more confidence, which I think was missing. In Las Vegas, I felt already reclaimed, so everything went our way.

Armpower: Any supplements - special ones?

Marta Opalinska: Nothing special. Good nutrition, vitamins and minerals.

Armpower: This is your last start in the junior categories. How do you see now starts next year?
Marta Opalinska: It's actually my last, junior start. Now I'll have to compete with seniorkami. But certainly not let go. I feel motivated and prove what I can do.

Armpower: Your sports
dream?
Marta Opalinska: All the time the same. Gold medal of the World and European Championships. It could have fulfilled. Unfortunately, this did not happen. But I will aim it and I believe that someday it will come true.

Armpower: Is there anyone you would like to thank for your help in training and starts?

Opalinska Martin: I would like to thank my trainer - Marlena Wawrzyniak, who prepares me all the time, she is with me, believes in me, and thanks to her heart and dedication I could reach for these beautiful World Championship medals. Also, I would like to thank my parents, without whom this trip and preparation would have been impossible. They  believe in me all the time and support with might and main.

Of course, armpower editors also believe in the success of the friendly Marta Opalinska.
