For some time now we have presented you the figures of our European Championships medalist. Today we want to introduce you to one of our juniors – Marta Olapińska from Grudziądź.

Marta Oplaińska has trained armwrestling for only 2 years now but she has already had a lot of successes on both the national and international field. Her recent achievement is winning the silver medal in the junior right arm 55kg category during the European championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Looking at her last performance I can say that it is not her last medal in an international competition. We wish her that.

Armpower: When have you started to train arm wrestling?
Marta Opalińska: Around 2 years now.

Armpower: Why Armwrestling?
Marta Opalińska: It has all started 20kg ago  First it started as reducing my body weight to a normal one, saving a young overweight body. That was the first contact with my coach. Then came arm wrestling. We were both learning this sport. Thanks to my coach I have learned self-discipline and encouragement. Arm wrestling is a great discipline which I can get away from. It’s in my life 24/7.

Armpower: Are you training or have you ever trained any other sports?
Marta Opalińska: I have always liked sports but I haven’t trained anything with such passion as arm wrestling. I am also interested in other sports disciplines.

Armpower: Do you remember your first competition and your first success?
Marta Opalińska: My first competition was the 5th Warsaw Championships. I have one gold and three silver medals there. The next events were the 2007 Debut’s and the Polish National Cup.

Armpower: Has this been you debut on the international field? If not have you had any successes?
Marta Opalińska: My first European championships were in Norway. I took 4th place back then. After that the Over The Top event in Germany, Zemaitijos Cup in Latvia and Senec Hand in Slovakia. My first World Championships was the event in Canada in 2008. I took 4th place there.

Armpower: Do you have any difficulties competing in you r weight category in Poland and with who you have the biggest problems?
Marta Opalińska: I don’t underestimate anyone and I try to stay focused all the time. I always want to win no matter if my opponent is the one I had problems with earlier. The popularity of arm wrestling is still growing and more and more pullers are competing in each event. I think that at the moment there is no easy category.

Armpower: With whom and where do you train?
Marta Opalińska: I train in my hometown of Grudziadz in the Arm Fanatic Sport club with my coach Marlena Wawrzyniak.

Armpower: How does your training look?
Marta Opalińska: We have a basic arm wrestling training 2-3 times a week, plus a strength, extreme and general training.

Armpower: What weights do you use?
Marta Opalińska: It depends on my training period. I try to use such weights not to hurt myself.

Armpower: Your training success?
Marta Opalińska: I don’t try maximum weights.

Armpower: Are you pleased with your performance at the European Championships in Bulgaria?
Marta Opalińska: Pleased is the least I can say. I am very happy because it is my biggest success ever.

Armpower: Can you describe how it is to stand on the European podium?
Marta Opalińska: It’s an awesome feeling. Firts the preparation, stress, the willingness to win. No one wants the hard work to waste. You win or you lose. Sometimes you need to stake everything on one roll of the dice. Standing on the podium though you won’t regret any minute spent on the preparation. You forget about the pain and tiredness. The only thing you feel is joy and that you are really good at doing something.

Armpower: Is it hard to go to such an international event?
Marta Opalińska: The lack of money is the biggest issue now in my opinion. The prices are high and not everyone can afford it. I would like to thank my parents who finance my starts. Many arm wrestlers are looking for sponsors or try to do anything to have enough money to compete. It shows how much they love the sport.

Armpower: Is the international field tough?
Marta Opalińska: Arm wrestling has been in the world much longer then in Poland. The experience of the competitors is much bigger. It is really hard, but we are getting close to the best nations in the world. .

Armpower: What next?
Marta Opalińska: Now I am getting ready for the Polish National Cup 2009. The year 2010 will be my last year as a junior. I want to get ready for it as good as possible.

Armpower: Any special diet?
Marta Opalińska: I think that like in every sport you need to eat proper things. I try to eat healthy. I prefer a balanced diet.

Armpower: Your arm wrestling authority?
Marta Opalińska: There are a couple of people in the world of arm wrestling who you can describe as an authority. Personally I admire John Brzenk as an incredible legend, and Irina Makaeeva for being the best arm wrestling woman in the world. More over I am full of respect for the people who compete again after a hard injury just like my coach. Thanks to her I could see on my very own eyes how hard it is to recover.

Armpower: Is arm wrestling a sport for everyone?
Marta Opalińska: Of course. Everyone can start training. It a sport where you need to fight, it improves your body and character, but if you want to stay in the sport and be successful you need a lot more character, ambition, stubbornness and love for the sport.

Armpower: What next – rest?
Marta Opalińska: Currently I am after my resting period. I feel regenerated and full of energy. My opponent’s are not sleeping. The summer holidays are the time when I can get ready without the additional school stress.
