Almost six years of sports career of 20 years old Grzegorz Nowak from Gdynia resulted in many successes on national (multiple Polish Champion and the winner of Polish Cup, the strongest Pole of right hand of 2008) and international (vice Junior Champion of Europe and World) field. Additionally his daily training hard work made him win the Open class of right hand and become the strongest Pole of the 10th Polish Cup – Starogard Gdański 2009 on the 27th of November 2009. Before he managed to become the strongest Pole of 2009 during this year’s World Professional Cup – Nemiroff World Cup – Warsaw, the 6th and 7th November 2009 he had managed to win the brown of right hand super heavy class. Thanks to Grzegorz Poland reached podium of the World Professional Cup of +95kg class for the first time.
So we asked Grzegorz Nowak how it is to fight with the best in the world and what he thinks of his start at Nemiroff World Cup 2009.
Do you feel someone special when you are standing on the podium of Nemiroff World Cup?
Name and surname: Grzegorz Nowak
Club: Złotu Tur
Starting weight: 112kg
Armpower: Did you prepare for this year’s Nemiroff World Cup 2009 in any special way?
Grzegorz Nowak: Although I was ready I gave up the start at this year’s World Championships – Italy 2009 only because I wanted to be better prepared for this year’s Nemiroff World Cup. As you see it paid. My trainings were directed mainly at an angle of strength. I decrease the amount of trainings from six to three weekly. I gave up the general exercises to enable better regeneration and the full realization of my armwrestling plan. I tried to increase the load during each training. In this way I achieved 154kg for wrist and made 8 moves with the load. I did not do the other exercises with big loads. I focused mainly on the proper move. I had the sparing depending on my mood, so not regularly. The ones I had the most sparing were Dawid and Piotr Bartosiewicz and the one who prepared me to the competitions was Igor Mazurenko.
Armpower: Ho wis it to fight with the best of the best and who was the one you were the most scared of in your class of Nemiroff World Cup 2009?
Grzegorz Nowak: because I did not hve the opportunity to fight with most of the competitors, I could be relaxed before none of the fights. I suspected I will not be able to oppose such competitors as Andry Pushkar and Denis Cyplenkov. Their time will come;). But I managed to beat the rest if the competitors. I must admit that the one I was scared of was Sławomir Głowacki. I did not wanted us to eliminate each other. I was not also sure what the result of the fights with such titled competitors as Geradi Kvikvinia, Tomsons Normunds and Tokarev Sergiy would be. I was surprised with the arrival of Aliaksandr Yankovski from Belarus, who I fought with in 2007 at the World and European Championships. That time I could not stop his hand. During Nemiroff Cup I did not know what to expect from him.
Armpower: What was your hardest duel of the tournaments?
Grzegorz Nowak: My hardest fight was the one with Geradim Kvikvinia from Georgia. He is a very titled competitor, the present World and European Champion of 110kg class, so the one I indented to start at. I could have beaten him much faster but I got really stressed before the fight. Furthermore I slept over the start and I had to get out of the almost lost position.
Armpower: Why not the gold? Were the other competitors stronger or you were not lucky enough?
Grzegorz Nowak: The competitors who started there were the World and European Champions before I got to know what armwrestling is. I will say shortly. The stronger, more experienced competitors than me won but it is not my last word;).
Armpower: What do you think of the sports and ornanization levl of the Nemiroff World Cup 2009?
Grzegorz Nowak: Not many of the starting competitors were not medalists of World or European Championships. And for sure each of them was the champion of their country. I think that there is no such a high sports level. When it comes to the organization I cannot pick on to anything. Everything was apple pie order. For me it was all at the highest level.
Armpower: Is your right or left hand better?
Grzegorz Nowak: At the moment definitely right hand. My left hand has been injured for quite long but when it will recover it is possible to overrun the right hand.
Armpower: How do you think, are we, the Polish armwrestlers reaching the level of other competitors?
Grzegorz Nowak: I think that we not only catch up with but also overrun. Maybe we are not as good as some of the competitors but I suspect that it will change soon.
Armpower: Is anyone able to beat John Brzenk for right hand in your opinion?
Grzegorz Nowak: One day such a person will be found. We should not forget that John is not so young Any more. But in my opinion, before it would happen John will retire unbeaten.
Armpower: Is anyone able to beat Denis Cyplenkov for left hand in your opinion?
Grzegorz Nowak: I think no one is able to beat this competitor s of yet and it will not change soon.
Armpower: Did you expect such a result?
Grzegorz Nowak: While going to the tournaments, no matter how import ant they are I always prepare myself to make the most of it, and that is my priority. But I of course discreetly moped to win a medal.
Armpower: Were you relaxed or stressed before each duel?
Grzegorz Nowak: I cannot be relaxed before the fight. Unfortunately I am always stressed needlessly.
Armpower: Did you feel what technique your opposition would use and did you have a plan for winning while approaching the table?
Grzegorz Nowak: I never plan Any fights. The technique or the way of lighting I choose always after getting hold of my opponents hand. Perhaps I do not always intuit how the opponent would fight but I always know how I should fight.
Armpower: Do you think you can become the best of your weight class in the future? If yes, when may it happen and what would you do to make it happen?
Grzegorz Nowak: I think all the competitors recon on being the best one day. I also hope it to happen. I do not know when. I do not know if it really would. But if so, I hope it would be soon. I will do the same I have already done to make it happen, so I will go ahead with no despair;).
Armpower: What should be done to have such scores as yours?
Grzegorz Nowak: Above all you cannot give up. You have to constantly aim and not to pay attention to your failures. And the successes will come themselves.
Armpower: What more – professional fights, other tournaments?
Grzegorz Nowak: During last two months I took part at 3 hard tournaments and now what I am thinking of is only to have some rest.
Armpower: And the last but the most import ant question. Are you satisfied with your start and how is it to stand on the podium of Nemiroff World Cup 2009?
Grzegorz Nowak: I am really happy. I have always wanted to start at World Professional Cup. Not to mention winning the medal. When you are standing on the podium of Nemiroff World Cup you feel like someone special. People do not look at you as a simple man but as the one of the best in the world. The feeling is indescribable.
