NEMIROFF WORLD CUP 2011
Behind the scenes #9

There was such a period in the history of the Polish football (sorry for the association), that commentators, ending the account of the lost match used to say: “Time for the assessment will come later.” I have always ridiculed it and asked - whether after a few days they will be wiser? This time I will not ridicule for this. Four medals on their field ... Is it good or bad result? ? ‘The field’ was not so much their own, as it could have been. It was not felt that our players were flying on wings of the fans’ doping. It is not worth to organize any more tournaments in such a little town as Ozarow Mazowiecki. To arrive from places that hosted us so far (Warsaw, Tri-City) is a problem, and the local audience - I counted only few people. Only our most loyal fans came.

Armwrestling is not a team sport. So why am I dealing with a description of the results of Polish team? Because I more feel, than know that something was not right. Why our lineup was not the best possible one? Why some players did not take off? Let us recall how it was.

Look before you leap

Three ladies took off, each fought on the left and the right hand. Marlene Wawrzyniak won the bronze on the first day. However on Saturday she had to enjoy seventh place only. Marta Opalińska ranked respectively 10th and 9th, Joanna Daminska was 6th and 4th As Marlena coped on the first day, why did not we see her on the podium on Saturday? She clearly had a bad cold and it is the simplest explanation. But on a cold on the day of the start is a sign that the player was already on the reserve of the organism and its resistance was affected earlier by an exhausting workout. Thus, recognizing her cold for a reason for weak performance, grudges can be held a against Marlena that she did not take care of her health in the period preceding the start. We are also waiting for her direct accounts of those days.

Nineteen gentlemen took part. In the first fives of given weight classes were five of our representatives, including Slawomir Malas twice. Out of the top ten Polish competitors appeared eleven times. Statistical Polish representative ended up his rivalry on the left hand on the 8th place, and on the right place on the 11th. Only in one left hand (-63 kg), weight category two Poles ranked in the top five. Significant is that the higher was the weight category, the worse did our armwrestlers. This is a great pity, because with the weight possibility of rivalry in the royal open class increases.

Most players came to the World Cup (both hands rivalry) from clubs from Grudziadz and Jaworzno (6). There were five offs of the athletes from Nisk and Piaseczno. UKS Arm Sports Fanatic Grudziadz had three winning places, all the players of the club ranked in the top ten. Athletes from Jaworzno did not gained a single place on the podium and took three places outside the top ten. On the podium stood apart from the representatives of Grudziadz only armwrestler from Ostroda.

The first day, left hand

-63 kg category, three Kazakhs and three Poles in this weight. No matter what was the draw their paths had to weave. The additional problem was that our exactly two players crossed the best of the Kazakhs - Jussupov. What’s more, we had here two fratricidal struggles. Slawek Malas vs Rafal Fiolek and earlier Rafal had to send Maciej Gralak to the changing room.

The first of the three representatives of Kazakhstan, later winner Jussupov, as a warm-up dealt with the Rafal Fiolek. Whereas in his first round of our second representative Slawek Malas easily defeated a Georgian, who in effect was the 10th. Just a bit later, just mentioned Kazakh treated Slawek to the first defeat. So they could be satisfied that they were beaten by the winner of a golden medal, even though this could not be foreseen. Slawek chasing for the medal still had to defeat a player from Armenia and ‘strike’ Rafal Fiolek in a fratricidal struggle. What he managed to do. Then he beat another player from Kazakhstan. He lost only with Murat Borlakov (Russia) so the silver medallist. A great joy was just around the corner.

-70 kg class. Mariusz Podgorski in the first fight defeated the representative of Israel, the player who finished the day on the 11th place. He overcame the Russian Dmitry Balamutov. Then his good passe was cut by the Ukrainian Oleh Zhokh. We cannot hold a grudge against our competitors, because Oleh bacame the winner in this category. In the fourth fight he slightly extended our hopes, winning with the Ukrainian representative Oleg Chernyavsky. Finally the Russian Umar Uzdenov, who ranked third sent him to the changing room. Dawid Groch drawn the second place winner in the first and lost. The second fight with the Swede who was seventh ended David’s battles.

-78 kg category of the following player composition: four from the Ukraine, three from Poland and two from Bulgaria and Kazakhstan. Radoslaw Staron in the first instalment won with a Bulgarian Plamen Dimitrov, who is eventually reached the 6th position. Sequentially he noted down victory over the Ukrainian Oleksandr Tsvetkov, the winner of the third place. Hope for something more appeared. Radek swallowed the Bulgarian. Suddenly! Stop! But not just with anyone, but Artem Taynov, who was first. The semi-finals and again won with Tsvetkov. In the cup-final he lost, who else with than Taynov. Apart from the obvious joy of the medal, you have to admit that the draw and the course of this category, lay down happily for the Poles. They did not have to fight with each other (although it would have changed little, I would have looked better).

Damian Drogosz lost at once with the players finally ranking beyond the top seven. In the first fight Dariusz Groch defeated the tenth that day Ukrainian in the first fight. Then he lost with the winner and subsequently with the seventh in the classification representative of Kazakhstan.

-86 kg category. Having the same last name Alexander and Sergey Getalo - two armwrestlers from Kazakhstan who appeared and really mixed things up here. One (Sergey) was second, and the second - eleventh. Tomasz Szewczyk lost at the beginning with the Slovak Dobrovic and a problem turned up. Fortunately he defeated Atkinson from Great Britain, and another Slovak. Hope came out when he beat Golemanov Stoyan (Bulgaria) at the next approach. But, say goodbye to your hope! In the last fight he crossed the Kazakh Alexander Getalo, who was the second and that’s how he ended the game on Friday. Wieslaw Rzanny lost at the beginning with Aliki Kachmazov (Russia), wins with the Ukrainian, who was 13th. He ends up just like Szewczyk, recognizing superiority of Alexander Getalo.

-95 kg category. For others, full of emotions, for us unfortunately, no history...

+95 kg category. We feel mostly sorry for Slawek Glowacki for whose impulse I really counted on. Unfortunately, he lost fights with players who do not even wiped out about the lead. What a pity! Marcin Skalski started from a defeat with Karpov, for which he should not be blamed. Won the next two fights, and just running to the podium Travis beat our competitor. Sadness remained, as it could have been arranged better that day, in the category.

The second day, right hand

-63 kg class once again gave us fights between the Poles. But first, Slawek Malas defeated two fighters from Ukraine. He lost with the winner Jussupov Mamede. To maintain the chance of further rivalries – he had to win again a clash with fraternal Rafal Fiolek , and he did. Then he removed from him way to the podium an Englishman - Barry Knowles. It was time for the semi-finals! He crossed the Russian - Murat Borlakov goes to the Russian and won. And in the cup-final he got beaten by already mentioned Kazakh.

Rafal Fiolek also met Murat Borlakov and he lost with a Russian third that day, in turn he defeated Oleksandr Balandin, whom Slawek beat earlier. So he had to pack up after being defeat by Slawek. He lost the fight for 5 / 6 place to Golovanov. Maciej Gralak defeated the Englishman, and then Armenii Adamyan, seventh in that day classification knocked him down.

-70 kg category – The best Poles -Lukasz Piechna (9th at last) first lost to the representative of Israel George Biro, later the beat a Swede and dropped out after the clash with a Romanian (the sixth player that day).

-78 kg class. Bad luck! First Dariusz Groch had his first win with Tsvetkov (Ukraine). He does not have to be ashamed of the lost to Zoloev. He won with a representative of Russia. Everything ended when Janis Amolins approached the table. Unfortunately. It could have been different ...

-86 Kg category was not fascinating at all from the point of view of our representatives.

-95 kg category. Marcin Molenda won two subsequent fights and then met wonderful at the event Arsen Liliev, and he lost. He defeated his companion Michal Weglicki and unfortunately hit the fourth that day Khadaev from Russia.

A traditional ending – time for the assessment of the Poles will come later...
