Piotr Szymanowski interviewed the first Polish world gold medallist – Igor Mazurenko

()

Happy?
Igor Mazurenko: Definitely! I’ve been waiting for eleven years for this gold.

Did you want to hear Mazurek Dobrowsikego, our whole team wanted, but that dream could not apparently be fulfilled. Why?
Igor: It was the first day of the competition so a little mess. They had no recordings, they simply forgot, did not tidy themselves up, I do not really know... However, asI emphasized in my account, I give the hosts an B mark.

For younger readers I have to add, that we are both of the generation, where B was the highest mark. Igor, but I would be more glad medal if the gold had been won by someone, sorry, younger.
Igor: This medal is the first world championship gold medal of the whole Polish armwrestling! This is OUR success, our, everyone who competes in Poland. It does not matter, if in the masters. It is, finally, the culmination of what we do. We won gold by a neck so many times: Slawek Glowacki in the super heavy in 2006, we missed just a little bit. Manchester, also 2006 - Ola Lewandowska, she beat the champion in the first fight, in the second one she did not managed. And even our girl Walentina Zaklicka in 2005, she also came across gold. We were reaching for gold for following starts, for eleven years. And we finally achieved it!

The success of our team is evident, I must agree. But it’s also your personal. How was that, what was your attitude to the start? Did you applied any changes?
Igor: Instead of, as the most player did, aiming the main take-off, achieve one, two form peaks in the season for given tournaments, I decided to train without breaks, as regularly as my work and trips enabled me to. Breaks – they simply must accompany my mode of life. But the assumption was to do as many pieces of work-outs as possible, regularly, without departing from the table. It worked out and turned out to be a good solution in my case.

What was the competition in your category?
Igor: Strong, as it happens in the Masters recently. Here are those players, who a few years ago stood on the podium in the seniors. It is really difficult to get on the box! The level raises due to those new, young Masters.

Can and if so how can this medal be a breakthrough for our sport in Poland?
Igor: For me as a coach, it is a great proof of my skills and knowledge. There are many trainers in armwrestling who brought up gold medallists, and they did not stood on the podium themselves. But “their pupils” give them “a patent”, they prove their coaching workshop. Once again, I stress, I have not yet arose any golden medallist I have my own gold. This medal is for me a stimulus for further work, to acquire and transfer knowledge to my players.

I must admit that I am also proud of the gold. Congratulations!
Igor: Thanks. This is not my last word at the table.
