We sorrowfully inform that on the 2nd April 2012 died Evgeni Usanov - one of the most titled people in our sport.

This outstanding sportsmen and trainer started his carrier as a wrestler and then an armwrestler. For dozens of years he was working in a Physical Culture Department at the University of Moscow, where he educated many high class competitors.

 

In 1990 the first section of armwrestling was organized on his initiative at the University of Moscow. During last 15 years he raised an impressive cast of sportsmen including over 30 European and World Champions i.e. Igor Grushnikov, Andrej Yunkov, Abdule Eldarov. From 1990 to 1992 Evgeni Usanov was leading the USSR armwrestling team and between 1992 and 1994 he was the main Russian trainer. In 1993 he became the first in the history of the sport, honoured USSR trainer.

 

Under the supervision of Usanov the Russian National Team five times in a row (1995/99) won the gold medal at the European Championships and six times won the World Championship (1994-1999).


Merging practice and scientific activity E. Usanov was a lecturer of many scientific and methodical conferences, seminar for trainers and teachers, he was popularizing armwrestling among students and youth in Moscow and the whole Russia. On his initiative our sport was included in a program of Moscow Students Olympics. It is currently practiced by 15 departments.

 

Evgeni Usanov was a creator of the collection “Stars of the Russian Armwrestling” and an author of a handbook “Armwrestli – wrestling on arms”.

In 2003 he was decorated with a Gold Medal of the European Armwrestling Federation for his contribution in promotion of Armwrestling in Europe.
