How to design an effective technique and apply it at the table.

()

Armwrestling is not only working out with weights, but also table training. You can’t have success without sparring. This is very important to remember, especially for beginners who sometimes approach our sport as if it was bodybuilding. Great shape and bulk is not everything.

Table training can be divided into two categories:

1.Working on effective technique

2.Fighting at the table

It’s no point trying to fight right from the get go, first you have to work on technique. Fighting causes maximum overload, which is not good for designing technique. It’s important to work with the sparring partner wisely, so that both of you have time to figure out the pressures.

REMEMBER! Your training mistakes will sooner or later come out at the table. To eliminate errors right from the start, beginners should train with professional coaches.

As for the fight itself, there is also a certain division:

1.You start the fight first, choosing the best position for yourself. This has the advantage of applying your best technique right from the start. Starting from best position almost guarantees a win. This option has its drawbacks, too. One can get too easily attached to starting from one position only. If the opponent is observant, they will quickly catch on and start forcing their hand.

2.The opponent starts the fight. You have to hold them right from the start and force your technique. This is the most universal variation. That’s why one has to start learning different techniques from the very beginning, and from various positions. If you have mastered “unhooking” a hook-using fighter, you will have no problem with the start. This option also has a drawback – submitting to your opponent too much. You always have to try to fight for the best position.

Which variation is better?

I think the combination of both is best. The optimum training scheme should be: work on technique without resistance from partner. Then increase resistance slowly, to the maximum point. Then the opponent attacks, and your job is to counter and defend. Real mastery comes from being able to attack from any position.

REMEMBER! When preparing for a tournament, it’s good to train with a referee present. You may get some great pointers as to setting up your arm, and learn to react to commands under stress. This is especially important for beginners.
