It’s not worth being cheap about it. The table we train with should be the same as the table we fight on. ()
In my mission as promoter of armwrestling I often tell people that it’s a cheap sport. Sometimes I actually think if this is not against my intentions. We are, after all, a society where it’s all about appearances. Many Polish people like to boast “big money” equipment instead of cheap stuff. With armwrestling, it can be really cheap to furnish a gym. Dumbbells don’t have to be gold-plated, barbells don’t need to be made with materials used by NASA, and ropes don’t have to be made of Kevlar.
There is however one piece of equipment you should save no money on – the table. During workouts and tournaments it undergoes horrendous pressures, and any damage can result in injury to people. Also, the table we train with must be identical to the table we fight on. During workouts we learn techniques that must work exactly the same in a real fight, with no technical differences due to equipment.
It’s not worth it to make tour own table from scrap metal. Of course, money is important, but I really encourage you to buy a real table. In a medium-sized gym, two tables are well enough. If everyone chips in together, the costs would be a few zlotys per person, and the tables will serve even your grandchildren.
And now, to the table!
Even back in 1993 armwerstling was still done in both standing and seated position. Even Worlds were fought standing one year, seated the next year. Presently only disabled tournaments are fought seated.
The reason for fighting in standing position is that the whole body can be used, and techniques are more varied.
So the table is to an armwrestler what tatami is to a judoka, a ring to a boxer, a track for a racecar driver.
Dimensions
The table height and table top sizes are the same everywhere, without variation:
Table height from floor to elbow-pad – 104 cm (113 with pads).
Table top
Length – 92 cm
Width – 66 cm
Elbow pads
Length – 18 cm
Width – 18 cm
Height – 5 cm
Technical notes
The elbow pad needs to be made without any rounded corners. It’s made of two layers of special gum. “Sharp” edges allow for referees to decide without a doubt on elbow fouls. Elbow pads are placed 5 cm forwards.
Elbow pads are placed asymmetrically, different for left and right arm. It’s been scientifically proven that fighting with asymmetrical pads is much safer than with parallel ones.
Side pads
Length – 25 cm
Width – 5 cm
Height – 10 cm
Side pads are designed to be moved in accordance with the fighting arm.
Pads are not bolted to the table, but slid into special grooves, They are made with special gum, comfortable and protecting from injuries.
Table edges
Table edges need to be soft, so as not to cause injuries. A special, time-resistant gum was used here to prevent deformations.
Table top
The table top is made from hardwood, covered with special gum, with sides filled with padding. The top of the table is covered with resilient artificial skin. Real skin is very expensive and it’s the best!
The table top must be divided into two clear halves, with a clear middle – this is necessary for refereeing purposes and starting setups. Colors are not important, as long as there are clear lines.
Table legs
Many have found out the importance of table legs. You don’t feel pain when you fight. But afterwards we do, when we see the state of our shins from leaning against the table legs. That’s why the legs need to be padded with special gum. It should provide traction and protect against injury at the same time.
The floor
If anyone’s seen a table rocking along with the fighters, the importance of the floor becomes evident. The lower profiles of the table have holes allowing for bolting the table to the surface. The bottom of the table is made of sheet metal, 100 x 200 cm. This is the heaviest element of the table , very hard to transport by hand. I know that, I had to carry them at the Worlds in Gdynia.
Podiums
Fighters may wish for special podiums to be set up. The podium design allows for a quick and stable fixing to the table.
