As at all kinds of tournaments the audience attention is mostly focused on seniors fights. And when the ones who fight are the competitors of the heaviest category, the direct observers of the fight began to liven up. That is how it was also during this year’s 31st World Championships from 7th till 13th of Septembert 2009 in Italy.
After the successes of juniors which made us come with 3 medals (just to remind you: Michalina Romanska won two brown medals and Natalia Kajdas won a silver one) for sure we hoped for more medals for the Poles. And that is what has happened. Maybe not medals, but a medal. A very import ant one. The silver medalist of right hand of World Championships – Manchester England 2006 Sławomir Głowacki from Inowroclaw
won the brown medal in the heaviest +110kg category
Slawek represented a very good form from the beginning of the starts. His weigh category at this year’s World Championships was full of titled competitors of world armwrestling field. Among them our representative from Inowroclaw found his place. (11th of September was the day of left hand rivalry and 12th of September was the day of right hand rivalry) in the fight for medals. Although he went like a stink for the medal finally he came 5th. That’s a pity. He was so close to the medal zone. Afraid so, having such rivals as Andrey Puschkar from Ukraine (he won left and right hands without any problems), Plamen Kisov from Bulgaria (he was second in the rivalries of both left and right hands), Tim Bresnan from USA, Peter Spusta from Slovakia, Ibragim Ibragimov from Russia we should not be surprised that he was stopped at certain moment.
Whereas the second day of seniors rivalry Slawek can include to the more successful ones. Here just like during left hand fights the competitor from Inowroclaw had 27 rivals from the whole world won the duel after the duel in the eliminations. The only one who defeated him was the Ukrainian contestant Andreya Pushkara. When in the elimination ladder he was coming closer and closer to the medal zone his duels were becoming much tougher. Duels that were bearded in his and out mind for a long time. The last two duels before the semifinal fight were probably the toughest ones. At first Slawek fought for few minutes with the legendary Russian competitor Ibragim Ibragimov (the Russian lost because of 2 fouls), then he fought similarly to get in to the final with Martin Dodov from Bulgaria. Unfortunately because of the lack of the break between the eliminations and semifinals, and after the earlier tough duels in semifinal Slawek had to concede the preponderance of another Bulgarian competitor Placent Kisov. Finishing the rivalry on the 3rd place eventually.
“…truly, if my hand had not been so pumped up and the Organizers had made at least 10 minutes break before the finals, I think I could have been able to defeat Bulgarian armwrestler in the semifinal. I felt I could have done that” – said Slawomir Glowacki after the fights.
Afraid so. Slawek can recognize this year’s championships as the successful ones. He showed us and other competitors that as usually he is in the running. As the last representative of Polish Team he added the 4th medal to the pool of this year’s World Championships – Italy 2009. That is what we want to thank him and congratulate. May it always be so!
