Anders Axklo tells us his opinions about fights and the decisions of the congress. ()
Hi Axklo, can you give us your conclusions from the Lithuanian WC's ?
In summary, two aspects. They level of performance is incredible, and today the vast majority of pullers at the World championships are fully trained top level athletes, as in any other sport.
The other is that our success in growing, is a challenge in organizing and promoting. We must develop tools to secure the quality in the organizing, so that we discover problems in time, and can help those who have trouble managing in time.
What do you think of the level of the fights, was there any one in particular that drew your attention?
The level of arm wrestling was incredible, and it is almost impossible to mention one over the other. With almost 1 000 arm wrestlers there are so many that are impressive. I enjoy both those who have perfected an explosive hit, and those, whose endurance is unbelievable.
Which fights were more spectacular - the mens or womens? Why?
It is not a matter of man or woman, any arm wrestling at this level is spectacular
Do you have any favorite of those championships ? If so, who and why?
No, not really, but I am very proud of the Swedish 12 year old junior Engla Horste who came to her first championship and managed to win a match against a 17-year old.
Has anything surprised, upset or awed you?
I always say that Sweden has many more world class armwrestlers than Heidi Andersson, but this time Heidi was fantastic. It was her 15th world championship and she took gold left and right. Absolutly amazing.
What do you think of Afghanistan, Estonia, Iceland, Irak and New Zealand joining the WAF family?
I am glad that we are growing, and our focus needs to be both on new nations being added, as well as developing those who have been members for long, but are not advancing, as an organization or as athletes. Sweden would be happy to share our experience from our work.
You are famous for restrictive penalties for drugs. Are you happy with the 4 year ban instead of 2?
In a way, but the testing between championships is more important, and something I really welcome. The length of the ban is good, but it is important to remember that those using doping are weak people, and even if we punish them for cheating, we must also find a way to help them from their addiction. It is the same as alcoholics, they need help, but until they get it they shouldn’t drive.
In the semifinals the referee cannot be of the same nationality as any of the fighters. What is the reason behind this decision?
This decision was taken at congress, but I personally disagree with it. The referees at worlds are at an extremely high level, and nationality does not matter. The decision opens up to endless suspicion and speculation, and in fact I find it insulting to the referees.
